BMW Releases i4 and iX Electric Cars

Consistently being a premium brand with the largest booth at GIIAS 2022, BMW Group Indonesia launched four new models at once. All of them fill the niche segment of BMW, two of which are pure electric cars. They are the BMW i4, iX, 2 Series Coupe, and New Z4.

The launch of the BMW i4 and iX duo marks the return of BMW to the electric car market in Indonesia, since the i3 several years ago. Each model represents a segment of the BMW market in the sedan and SAV segments. While the other two new models, the Series 2 Coupe and the Z4 facelift, complete the sportscar model line that offers the sensation of driving pleasure.

The BMW i4 is the first pure electric powered four-door sedan from the German manufacturer. The form is a 4-door coupe format and features a controversial large grille design. Indonesia gets the i4 eDrive40 variant, relying on a synchronous electric motor mounted on the rear wheels. This powertrain produces 335 hp and 430 Nm of torque.

The performance figures above allow the i4 eDrive40 to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. While the distance is claimed to reach 590 km (WLTP) the furthest, armed with a battery with a capacity of 83.9 kWh. The BMW i4 is the answer to compete with the electric sedan in its class that already existed, namely the Tesla Model 3.

The second electric car is the BMW iX which is also present through the xDrive40 variant. The first SAV model from the BMW i sub-brand is the same as the i4, carrying a synchronous electric motor capable of delivering 322 hp and peak torque of up to 630 Nm. But the difference is, the iX electric motor is active on all wheels, aka connected to the xDrive drive system. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be achieved in 6.1 seconds.

While the distance of the electric powertrain is claimed to be as far as 425 km (WLTP). The battery itself has a capacity of 76.6 kWh. Both the i4 and iX use a CCS Combo 2 type charger slot for DC fast charging.

In addition to electric cars, the new generation BMW 2 Series Coupe is now present in the country. This model will later become the basis of the prospective new generation BMW M2 Coupe. The Indonesian market is offered the 220i variant, with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. Output of 181 hp and 300 Nm of torque is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW 220i gets a few touches from the M Sport as standard, such as the design of the five-spoke alloy wheels, the braking system, and some of the interior trims.

The latest new model is the LCI version of the BMW Z4 (life cycle impulse) aka facelift. In Indonesia, it is now offered in the sDrive30i variant, as when it first launched in 2019. There are several changes and minor updates brought to this Toyota GR Supra twin folding roof car. The 2.0-liter turbo engine behind the bonnet has 255 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
