World Electric Car Brand Ranking United States Number One Korea Sixth

Sales of pure electric vehicles or Electric Vehicles (EV) from the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Motor Company experienced an increase in the first half of 2021, compared to sales last year. However, the global market is experiencing stiff competition with the United States and China.

Quoted by Antara news agency from the Korean news agency, Yonhap, Hyundai Motor Company ranked sixth for global EV sales in the January-June period, or down one place from fifth position last year.

According to industry tracker SNE Research data as quoted by Antara news agency, Hyundai's global EV sales jumped 75.6 percent to 51,300 units in the first six months of this year. But its market share fell to 2.9 percent from 4.5 percent during this period.

Tesla Incorporation cemented its lead in the global EV market with a 22.2 percent share in the first half. Here is the complete order of the best-selling EV car manufacturers in the first half of 2021:
  1. Tesla Incorporation
  2. SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile, a joint venture between SAIC Motor, General Motors and Liuzhou Wuling Motor
  3. BYD
  4. Volkswagen
  5. Great Wall Motors Company
  6. Hyundai Motor Company.
Among the top five, two are Chinese automakers and joint ventures involving China's Bamboo Curtain company.

Hyundai itself increased EV sales through the marketing of the Hyundai Kona EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, and Porter earlier this year. Meanwhile, China, as a competitor to fellow Asian automotive giants, has skyrocketed to expand its market, in addition to serving strong domestic demand.

SNE Research states that the Korean automaker is facing an uphill battle to expand its presence in the growing EV market. The stumbling block is the established automaker and rival from China.
